Norway Trail

Leave everyday life behind at the foot of the mountains. Over five days, hike across Jotunheimen, Norway’s highest mountain range, from one mountain hut to the next, past glaciers, wild rivers and turquoise lakes, all the way to the famous Besseggen Ridge. You take care of the effort and the sense of achievement. We’ll handle the logistics.
Highlights
  • Norway’s highest peaks beneath your feet
  • Cosy mountain huts, with dinner and breakfast included
  • The iconic Besseggen Ridge above Lake Gjende
  • Glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise mountain lakes along the way
  • You hike, we take care of all the planning.

Hike from hut to hut in Jotunheimen, Norway

Jotunheimen literally means “Home of the Giants”, and it lives up to the name. It’s Norway’s most spectacular mountain range and one of Europe’s finest trekking destinations: more than 250 peaks rise above 1 900 metres, including Galdhøpiggen (2 469 metres) and Glittertind (2 465 metres), the two highest peaks in Northern Europe.

Over five full days of hiking, the Norway Trail takes you around 70 kilometres through this national park. You start strong with the climb to Galdhøpiggen from Spiterstulen, then continue from hut to hut all the way to Gjendesheim. Every evening comes with the same reward: a proper meal, a real bed, breakfast the next morning and a lounge where you can swap stories about the day with fellow adventurers.

Your route leads through glacier-carved valleys, along glacial streams and the turquoise waters of Lake Gjende, before a dreamlike final descent along the famous Besseggen Ridge. Mountain huts, transfers, a briefing with a ranger and the route in the app: we take care of all the logistics, so all you have to do is walk (and look up every now and then).

    • Ask the lodge staff: they know the current trail conditions and weather. Check with them every morning before setting off.

It’s very important to walk at your own pace so you can keep going all week. Always check the weather before setting off, and don’t hesitate to choose an alternative route if the weather turns bad.

Frequently asked questions about The Norway Trail

You’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions below! Can’t find yours? Feel free to get in touch.

Why book The Norway Trail with Travelbase?

Norway is a wild country, and exploring Jotunheimen on your own without experience can quickly become complicated: booking mountain huts, arranging transport and choosing a safe route. We’ve simplified everything, so there’s only one thing left for you to do: enjoy the adventure.

  • Adventure without the mental load: our team has designed a balanced route that’s accessible to anyone who’s motivated and in good physical shape. You don’t have to plan a thing: we take care of all the logistics, including mountain huts, transfers, a briefing with the ranger and the route in our app.
  • Welcoming mountain huts: every night, you’ll sleep in a traditional Norwegian mountain hut, surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery, with dinner and breakfast included.
  • A complete package at a fair price: your only job is to walk and switch off. We’ll take care of everything else.
Is The Norway Trail guided or self-guided?

The Norway Trail is a self-guided hike: you walk independently, at your own pace, with the freedom to stop wherever you like.

But you’ll be well prepared. On day 1, at the hotel in Dombås, a local ranger will brief you on the route, the weather and mountain safety. The trails are clearly marked with the Norwegian Trekking Association’s red Ts, and the full route is available offline in the Travelbase app.

Each evening, you’ll meet the other participants back at the mountain hut, so you’re never really alone in the mountains.

Is it safe to hike independently in Jotunheimen?

Yes. The Norway Trail follows popular, well-marked trails between staffed mountain lodges, and we prepare you so you can hike with confidence.

  • Briefing with the ranger on day 1: at the hotel in Dombås, a local ranger walks you through the route, the weather, safer alternatives for Galdhøpiggen, Bukkelægeret and Besseggen, and essential mountain-safety practices.
  • The ranger is still available: throughout the trail, you can contact them with any questions about the route or conditions.
  • Offline maps and GPS: the Travelbase app shows the route and your location, even without a network connection.
  • Marked trails and staffed mountain lodges: the red Ts of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) mark the entire route, and each evening you arrive at a staffed lodge whose team knows the current conditions.
  • You’re never far from others: you meet the other participants at the briefing, spend your evenings together at the lodge, and many hikers team up for the more exposed sections.

In an emergency, call 112. Want to know whether this trail is right for your level? Read “ Is this trail right for me? ”.

Where do you stay during the trail?

During the trail, you’ll stay in Dombås and in four staffed mountain lodges in Jotunheimen National Park:

  • Day 1: hotel in Dombås
  • Day 2: Spiterstulen
  • Day 3: DNT Leirvassbu
  • Day 4: DNT Gjendebu
  • Day 5: Memurubu
  • Day 6: hotel in Dombås

At the lodges, you’ll sleep in shared rooms or dorms with bunk beds. Every lodge has toilets and a warm dining room where dinner and breakfast are served, both included, plus a friendly atmosphere where hikers can meet. For your final night in Oslo (day 7), you can optionally book a bed with us at the youth hostel.

What do you eat during the trail?
  • Included: breakfast every morning from day 2 to day 7 (at the hotel in Dombås or at the mountain hut), plus a hearty dinner at each mountain hut on days 2 to 5.
  • Lunch on the trail: add our optional packed lunch (vegetarian or with meat) when booking, or buy snacks at the huts along the way.
  • At your own expense: lunch and dinner on day 1, dinner on day 6 in Dombås, lunch and dinner on day 7, and all meals on day 8.
  • Water: you can refill your water bottle at the huts and in fast-flowing mountain streams along the way.

What to pack for a hut-to-hut trek in Jotunheimen?
  • The essentials: the right shoes and clothing. Your best ally is a sturdy pair of high-cut hiking boots that support your ankles and have already been broken in. The weather in the Norwegian mountains can change quickly, so bring warm layers (fleece, beanie and gloves) plus reliable protection from rain and wind.
  • Pack light: since you’ll be sleeping in mountain huts, there’s no need to bring a tent, sleeping bag or sleeping mat. A 30- to 40-litre backpack is usually enough. Don’t forget a sleeping bag liner (mandatory in the huts, and also available as an optional extra).
  • No stress, we’ll guide you. This is just an overview. You’ll receive a complete, detailed packing list well in advance.
Puis-je laisser des bagages pendant la randonnée ?
  • Travel light! Since you return to Dombås on day 6, you can leave anything you won’t need in the mountains, such as spare clothes and things for Oslo, in a small bag at the hotel. [TBD: to be confirmed with the hotel]
  • Please don’t leave any valuables in your bag.
How do I get to the trek starting point?
  • Train to Dombås: direct trains run from Oslo Gardermoen Airport to Dombås, where the trail begins. Make your own way there on day 1, check in at the hotel and attend the ranger briefing at around 6:00 pm.
  • Shuttle to the mountains: after breakfast on day 2, our shuttle takes you from Dombås to Spiterstulen. On day 6, it brings you back from Gjendesheim to Dombås. Both transfers are included.
  • Plan your train journey on entur.no or vy.no.
How many people are on the trail?

We offer several departure dates so participants are spread throughout the season. During the hikes, you walk at your own pace and meet up with the rest of the group at the lodge in the evening and morning. Group size: [TBD].

Do I hike alone or in a group?
  • Walk at your own pace. This is your adventure: hiking independently means you decide when to set off, where to take a break and how fast you go.
  • You’re never truly alone. You’ll meet fellow hikers at the ranger briefing and at the hotel in Dombås on day 1, then catch up with the others at the refuge each evening. Many hikers team up along the way.
  • Safety first. Stick to the marked trails, check the weather before setting off and choose safer alternatives in bad weather, for example at Besseggen and Bukkelægeret.
Is Besseggen difficult, and is there an alternative?

Besseggen is one of Norway’s most popular hikes, suitable for fit hikers with no climbing experience. The ridge itself involves a short scramble of a few hundred metres, where you’ll occasionally use your hands, with steep drops on both sides. It’s exposed, but very popular and well marked.

Do you get dizzy at heights, or is the weather bad? Choose a safer alternative, such as the boat across Lake Gjende from Memurubu to Gjendesheim. You won’t miss out: the view from the lake is just as spectacular.

Do you need climbing or glacier experience to climb Galdhøpiggen?

No. From Spiterstulen, the marked route to the summit of Galdhøpiggen does not cross any glaciers, so there’s no need for a rope, crampons or climbing experience.

It’s still a long and rewarding day hike, with around 1,380 metres of ascent and descent, mostly over rocks and boulder fields, with possible patches of snow near the summit. Good fitness and sturdy hiking boots are essential. Check the weather forecast and ask the hut staff for advice on the day. If conditions aren’t safe for the summit, choose a shorter hike around Spiterstulen instead.

How many kilometers do we cover in total?
  • About 70 km over 5 days of hiking: a round trip to the summit of Galdhøpiggen, followed by the route from Spiterstulen to Gjendesheim, with around 3 350 m of total ascent and 3 460 m of total descent.
  • An average of 14 km and around 6 hours of hiking per day, ranging from the short 10.5 km stage to Memurubu to the 19 km stage to Gjendebu.
  • We’ll help you prepare. It’s not just the distance that matters, but also the elevation gain and rocky terrain. To help you make the most of this achievable challenge, you’ll receive a training plan well before departure.
Is this trail right for me?
  • For fit and motivated hikers (ages 16–65). Fitness matters more than age. The trail is suitable for anyone in good health who is active and ready for a challenge. You don't need to be a high-level athlete, but good preparation is essential. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • A sure footing helps. Along with the long climb to Galdhøpiggen, the route includes two exposed sections, Bukkelægeret and Besseggen. No climbing skills are required, but you should feel comfortable on steep, rocky terrain.
  • Independent hiking. You'll be hiking independently, so you should feel comfortable following marked mountain trails with the help of the app.
  • Travel light. Since you'll be sleeping in mountain huts, you'll only carry a light backpack with your personal belongings.
  • Route details. For more information, see our detailed overview of the distance, elevation gain, weather and terrain in the section “Is this trail right for me?” above.
Can I join on my own?
  • Absolutely! It’s actually a great idea. Many of our participants sign up on their own. It’s the best way to have your own adventure while meeting some great people along the way.
  • There’s strength in numbers. The atmosphere on the trail and the relaxed evenings at the cabin naturally bring people together. You’re never alone, unless you want some time to yourself.
  • Hike your own way. Enjoy some solo time, or team up with other participants to share the experience.
What’s the best time of year to hike in Jotunheimen?

The hiking season in Jotunheimen runs from mid-June to mid-September, when the mountain lodges are open. In late June and early July, snow patches may still cover the higher sections, and rivers carry a lot of meltwater. July and August generally offer the most stable weather and the longest days, with daylight lasting well into the evening. In September, the first autumn colours appear and the trails become quieter.

Is there mobile coverage along the route?

Mobile reception in Jotunheimen can be patchy: you’ll often get a signal near mountain cabins and at higher elevations, but not in many valleys. That’s part of the charm: a real digital detox! The Travelbase app works offline, so you can always follow the route on your phone. In an emergency, call 112 as soon as you have reception.

How can I offset the CO2 emissions from my trip?

When you book, you can support a certified climate project through Greentripper. Your contribution supports an initiative involving 11 local projects in Uganda that distribute more efficient cookstoves. The result: less fuel consumption, better protection for forests from deforestation, and cleaner air for local families. The project is certified by the Gold Standard, the highest international standard for climate projects.

If you choose to contribute, Travelbase also offsets the emissions from your trip. After your journey, you’ll receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Jotunheimen National Park: Norway’s highest mountains

Jotunheimen National Park covers 1,151 km² of wild mountain landscapes in the heart of southern Norway. Protected since 1980, it is home to more than 250 peaks over 1,900 metres, including Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m) and Glittertind (2,465 m), the two highest mountains in Northern Europe.

Glaciers carved this landscape into deep valleys, sharp ridges and countless lakes, including Lake Gjende, which stretches for 18 km and gets its emerald colour from glacial sediment. Reindeer roam the high plateaus, while the valleys fill with wildflowers in summer.

People have been hiking from cabin to cabin here for more than 150 years. With its network of marked trails and staffed mountain cabins, many of them run by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), Jotunheimen is one of the best places in Europe for a multi-day trek.
