Additional options

When booking, you can add the following options to your trek.

How to get there?

Would you rather organize your trip and book your flights yourself? That’s absolutely fine, you’ll have complete flexibility.

To join us, you have two options:

  1. Take our shuttle (optional, included with the flights): simply book the transfer when you sign up. It will pick you up with the rest of the group in Bergen, either at the airport or in the city center.
  2. Make your own way to base camp: you can also join us independently in Garen.

Our advice: if you choose the shuttle, make sure your flight times match the transfer schedule for a smooth arrival.

How about arriving a day early? If you book your own flights, you can arrive in Bergen the day before (Day 0). That gives you time to explore the city without rushing and start your getaway from the very first minute. You can book this extra night at Hostel Montana as an optional add-on with us.

About the flights: fares are updated daily. Our advice: the sooner you book, the better the price.

What should I expect?

Several factors go into describing a trek. The details below will give you a good idea of what to expect.

FAQ’s

We invite you to check out the FAQs below. They provide comprehensive answers to the questions we’re asked most often. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for, feel free to contact us.

Why book this adventure with us?

Norway is a wild country. Exploring it on your own without any experience can be challenging. We’ve simplified everything so you only have one thing to do: enjoy the adventure.

  • Adventure without the mental load: Our expert guides have created a well-balanced itinerary that’s accessible to anyone who’s motivated and in good physical shape. You don’t need to plan a thing: we take care of all the logistics, including transport, mountain huts, routes in our app and French-speaking guides….
  • Pure immersion, or the comfort of choice: We’ve selected the best places for your overnight stays. Whether you choose the friendly atmosphere of mountain huts or the immersive experience of sleeping in a tent, you’ll be surrounded by incredible landscapes.
  • A complete package at a fair price: Your only job is to hike and switch off. We take care of everything else, including practical options like the food pack, so you can enjoy an adventure to remember.
Are there guides?

Absolutely. Our expert guides are the backbone of your adventure, giving you the perfect balance of safety and independence.

Every morning, they share advice and tips for the day’s stage. Then it’s your trek: you’re free to walk at your own pace and completely switch off. If you’d rather chat or feel reassured, simply walk alongside them.

They keep a low profile but are always there when you need them, ready to assist and keep an eye on you. One guide brings up the rear, and they’re all equipped with emergency GPS trackers. You can focus on the vast landscapes while we take care of your safety.

Where and how will I sleep?
  • Two experiences to choose from: Go all in with total immersion in a tent (bring your own gear or rent ours) and wake up as close to nature as possible. Or choose the mountain hut option for the warmth and friendly atmosphere of traditional mountain cabins.
  • Essential comfort on the trek: Whichever option you choose, you’ll sleep in unique locations, all equipped with toilets. This is the back-to-basics experience and complete escape you came for. (Refuge bonus: you’ll also get an extra shower at Vivelid.)
  • Comfort before and after the hike: Enjoy well-deserved showers in Garen and Kinsarvik.
  • For your nights in Bergen (the night before departure, Day 0, or the final night, Day 7), you can optionally book a place with us at Hostel Montana for a more relaxed experience.
What are you planning to eat?
  • Back to basics: On the Hardangervidda, you’re completely self-sufficient. That’s what truly disconnecting is all about! Apart from a few snacks or evening meals sold at some mountain huts, you won’t find a shop until Kinsarvik. So make sure you bring enough food for the trek.
  • The easier option: the food pack To make things simpler, we offer an optional food pack. It includes freeze-dried meals, a gas stove and a pot. All you need to bring is a lighter and reusable cutlery.
  • Two options to choose from:
    • The Full Pack covers all your meals for every day of the hike. €107 (17 meals)
    • The Light Pack is ideal if you want to mix things up, for example by buying dinner at certain mountain huts, such as Vivelid and Stavali, or shopping for groceries in Kinsarvik. €85 (11 meals)
What are the nights in the mountain huts like?
  • Travel light, feel free. It’s the smart way to make the most of your adventure. Without a tent or sleeping mat to carry, your pack is lighter and you can save all your energy for taking in the incredible scenery.
  • Authenticity and a friendly atmosphere. Experience the unique atmosphere and warm welcome of Norwegian mountain cabins. You’ll sleep indoors in bunk beds, the perfect setting to share the highlights of the day with fellow hikers.
  • Simple and comfortable, even when camping: At the base camps in Garen and Kinsarvik, you’ll stay in shared cabins with access to the campsite’s bathroom facilities. On the plateau, we provide a sleeping-bag liner. Just bring a pillowcase for a little extra personal comfort.
  • Food: Some cabins offer an optional evening meal. We’ll let you know by email as your trip approaches. Some cabins also sell a few snacks.
How are the hikes organised?
  • Your personal GPS for freedom: At the start of the trip, you’ll get access to our Norway Trail app. It includes the full route, points of interest and details for each stage. It’s the perfect tool for hiking at your own pace and independently if you want to. The map is available offline, so you can follow the route straight from your phone.
  • Our guides’ expertise by your side: You’re never on your own, unless you choose to be! Several experienced guides are on the trail throughout the trip. They brief you each morning, keep you motivated and are there to help straight away if you run into difficulties or the weather changes.
  • The best of both worlds: Enjoy a complete digital disconnect while following the route on your phone, with total peace of mind knowing that a professional team is looking after you and handling all the logistics behind the scenes.

  • 6 nights, including 3 at comfortable campsites and 3 near mountain huts on the Hardangervidda (overnight stays in the huts available as an optional extra)
  • Experienced French-speaking guides
  • Carefully planned and well-balanced itinerary
  • Norway Trail app with all the information you need
  • Complete gear list and advice to help you prepare for your trek

What should I bring with me?

Packing your bag: the essentials

  • The essentials: suitable shoes and clothing. Your best ally will be a pair of high-quality hiking boots that cover your ankles and are already comfortable to wear. Norwegian weather can change quickly, so pack warm clothing (fleece, hat and gloves), as well as good protection from rain and wind. Nights can be chilly!
  • Your base camp: choosing where to sleep. If you don’t choose the huts option, you have two possibilities:
    1. Bring your own gear: Bring your tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag (a three- or four-season model suitable for cold weather).
    2. Rent from us (optional): Travel light! We can provide a complete kit (tent, sleeping mat, sleeping bag and sleeping bag liner), or any item individually. Everything is perfectly suited to the conditions and weather-resistant.
  • No stress, we’ll guide you. This is just an overview. We’ll send you a complete, detailed packing list well in advance to help you prepare your bag without forgetting anything.
Can I leave my belongings at the camp while I go hiking?

Hike light: your bags will be waiting for you

  • Hike with a lighter mind (and back)! Yes, you can leave a small travel bag with us at the start. It’s perfect for storing your “post-hike” essentials (a change of clothes and things you’ll need in Bergen) that you won’t need on the plateau.
  • We’ll take care of the logistics. While you enjoy your adventure in the great outdoors, our team will transport your bag for you.
  • Enjoy some comfort in Kinsarvik. Your bag will be waiting for you when you arrive on Day 5, so you can enjoy a comfortable evening before the optional Trolltunga hike. Don’t leave any valuables in your bag.
Do I need to bring my own camping equipment?
  • The choice is yours. You’re free to bring your own camping gear or choose our rental package (available as an optional extra) for a more carefree trip.
  • If you bring your own gear: The Hardangervidda is a demanding environment. Make sure your equipment is high quality and suitable for cold conditions. A three-season tent at the very least, a compact sleeping mat and a warm sleeping bag are essential.
  • If you rent from us: We’ll provide reliable equipment. You can rent a one-person tent if you’re travelling solo, or a two-person tent if there are two of you.
What’s included in the food pack?

The Foodpack option: for extra convenience

  • The recommended option for total peace of mind. Make things easy for yourself! This pack includes all your freeze-dried meals for your hiking days: tasty, varied breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
  • The cooking kit is included. We provide the essentials: a pot, a camping stove and a gas canister. All you need to bring is reusable cutlery (preferably lightweight) and a lighter.
  • Suitable for your diet. Vegetarian? No problem. A complete vegetarian version of the meal pack is available. Simply select it when you book.
How do I get to base camp?
  • The convenient option: our shuttle. To make getting here as easy as possible, we offer a direct transfer between Bergen Airport and our base camp, both ways.
    • If you book your flights with us: the shuttle is included automatically. You don’t need to arrange a thing.
    • If you book your flights yourself: you can simply add the shuttle as an optional extra when you sign up.
  • The independent option: public transport. If you prefer to arrange your own transfers, you can reach the base camp using Norway’s public transport. You’ll find all the information you need at skyss.no
  • By car: you can park at Kinsarvik campsite and take public transport to Garen campsite, where your adventure begins.
How many people are on the hike?

We offer several departure dates so participants are spread throughout the season. During the hike, you can walk at your own pace and meet up with the rest of the group at base camp in the evening and morning.

Do I have to follow the guide, or can I hike on my own?
  • Walk at your own pace. This is your adventure. Every morning, our guides give you a full briefing on the day’s route. After that, you’re free to hike independently and fully switch off, or walk alongside them if you’d rather chat.
  • You’re never alone (unless you want to be). We provide discreet but constant support. One guide leads the way and another brings up the rear to keep an eye on the whole group. They’re always available if you need help.
  • Safety comes first. The only exception to this freedom is severe weather. In that case, to keep everyone safe and comfortable, our guides may ask you to stay together as a group.
How can I offset the CO2 emissions from my trip?

When you book, you can contribute to a certified climate project through Greentripper. Your contribution supports an initiative made up of 11 local projects in Uganda that distribute more efficient cooking stoves. This reduces fuel consumption, helps protect forests from deforestation and improves air quality for local families. The project is Gold Standard certified, meeting the highest international standards for climate projects.

If you choose to contribute, Travelbase will also offset the emissions generated locally. After your trip, you’ll receive an official carbon credit certificate.

Want to learn more about our initiatives for more sustainable tourism? Find out more at Travelbase.

How far will we travel?
  • About 90 km of total immersion. That’s the total distance of your adventure, including Trolltunga. It’s spread over several days, giving you the chance to completely disconnect in the heart of Hardangervidda’s epic landscapes.
  • An adventure that suits you. The iconic Trolltunga stage (26 km) is optional. If you’d rather take a rest day in Kinsarvik, your route will be around 64 km. You choose your own challenge.
  • We’ll help you get ready. It’s not just the distance that matters, but the elevation gain too. To help you make the most of this accessible challenge, we’ll send you a training plan well before departure.
Is this adventure right for me?
  • For active adventurers aged 16 to 65. Your fitness level matters more than your age. This trek is suitable for anyone who is healthy, active and ready for a challenge. You don’t need to be an athlete, but good preparation is essential if you want to enjoy the adventure. Please note that anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • The challenge: carrying your own pack. Getting out into the wilderness means carrying your belongings. But we have two options to lighten your load:
    1. Leave a bag at the start: you can leave us a small bag with your “after-trek” clothes and essentials. Our guides will transport it to Kinsarvik for you.
    2. The Hut option: this is the more comfortable choice. With this option, you don’t have to carry a tent, sleeping bag or sleeping mat.
  • The route in detail. To help you prepare, check out our detailed breakdown of the distance, elevation gain, weather and terrain in the “Difficulty level” section further up this page.
Can I travel alone?
  • Absolutely! It's a great idea. Many of our participants sign up on their own. It's the perfect opportunity to enjoy your own adventure while meeting great people along the way.
  • There's strength in numbers. The atmosphere on the trek and the friendly evenings naturally make it easy to connect with others. You'll never be alone unless you want some time to switch off.
  • Walk at your own pace. You can choose to spend some time on your own, or join our guides or other participants and share the experience.

L’Hardangervidda

Hardangervidda is far more than a simple plateau. It’s an 8,000 km² ocean of silence, and one of the most impressive natural areas in the world.

Here, you’ll hike above the fjords, with views that seem to stretch endlessly. Every night is an experience in its own right, whether you spend it in a mountain lodge or under canvas, in unique locations we’ve carefully selected.

You’ll discover the plateau at a magical time of year: the snowmelt season. Hardangervidda is waking up. Water is everywhere, rivers are growing stronger and spectacular waterfalls burst from every direction, creating a powerful spectacle that takes your breath away.
