Norway Trail

Leave everyday life behind at the foot of the mountains. Over five days, hike across Jotunheimen, Norway’s highest mountain range, from one mountain hut to the next, past glaciers, wild rivers and turquoise lakes, all the way to the famous Besseggen Ridge. You take care of the effort and the sense of achievement. We’ll handle the logistics.
Highlights
  • Norway’s highest peaks beneath your feet
  • Cosy mountain huts, with dinner and breakfast included
  • The iconic Besseggen Ridge above Lake Gjende
  • Glaciers, waterfalls and turquoise mountain lakes along the way
  • You hike, we take care of all the planning.

Hike from hut to hut in Jotunheimen, Norway

Jotunheimen literally means “Home of the Giants”, and it lives up to the name. It’s Norway’s most spectacular mountain range and one of Europe’s finest trekking destinations: more than 250 peaks rise above 1 900 metres, including Galdhøpiggen (2 469 metres) and Glittertind (2 465 metres), the two highest peaks in Northern Europe.

Over five full days of hiking, the Norway Trail takes you around 70 kilometres through this national park. You start strong with the climb to Galdhøpiggen from Spiterstulen, then continue from hut to hut all the way to Gjendesheim. Every evening comes with the same reward: a proper meal, a real bed, breakfast the next morning and a lounge where you can swap stories about the day with fellow adventurers.

Your route leads through glacier-carved valleys, along glacial streams and the turquoise waters of Lake Gjende, before a dreamlike final descent along the famous Besseggen Ridge. Mountain huts, transfers, a briefing with a ranger and the route in the app: we take care of all the logistics, so all you have to do is walk (and look up every now and then).

Self-guided trail

  • Stay safe on the trail, without a guide

    • Briefing with the ranger on day 1: at the Dombås hotel, our local Travelbase ranger will walk you through the route, the weather and essential mountain safety tips, including safer alternatives for Galdhøpiggen, Bukkelægeret and Besseggen. You’ll also receive your rented hiking poles then.
    • The ranger is always reachable: throughout the trail, you can contact them with any questions about the route or conditions.
    • Offline maps and GPS in the Travelbase app: follow the route and check your location on your phone, even without a signal.
    • Well-marked trails: the entire route follows the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (DNT) red T-markers, and each evening you’ll arrive at a staffed mountain lodge.
    • Ask the lodge staff: they know the current trail conditions and weather. Check with them every morning before setting off.

It’s very important to walk at your own pace so you can keep going all week. Always check the weather before setting off, and don’t hesitate to choose an alternative route if the weather turns bad.

Frequently asked questions about The Norway Trail

You’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions below! Can’t find yours? Feel free to get in touch.

Is the Norway Trail guided or self-guided?

The Norway Trail is a self-guided trail: you walk independently, at your own pace, and you stop wherever you like.

But you’re well prepared. On day 1, a local ranger gives you a briefing at the hotel in Dombås on the route, the weather and mountain safety. The paths are well marked with the red Ts of the Norwegian Trekking Association, and the full route is available offline in the Travelbase app.

Every evening, you meet the other hikers at the hut, so you’re never really alone in the mountains.

Is it safe to hike self-guided in Jotunheimen?

Yes. The Norway Trail follows popular, well-marked paths between staffed huts, and we prepare you so you can walk with confidence.

  • Briefing with the ranger on day 1: at the hotel in Dombås, a local ranger talks you through the route, the weather, the safer alternatives for Galdhøpiggen, Bukkelægeret and Besseggen, and the right habits in the mountains.
  • The ranger stays reachable: throughout the trail, you can contact them with any question about the route or conditions, as long as you have a signal.
  • Offline maps and GPS: the Travelbase app shows the route and your position, even without a signal.
  • Marked paths and staffed huts: the red Ts of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) mark the whole route, and every evening you arrive at a staffed hut whose team knows the current conditions.
  • Never far from others: you meet the other hikers at the briefing, share the evenings at the hut, and many hikers team up for the exposed sections.
  • Walk at your own pace, but stay safe: stick to the marked paths, check the weather before setting off and choose the safer alternatives in bad weather, for example at Besseggen and Bukkelægeret.

In an emergency, call 112. Want to know if the trail is right for your level? Read “Is this trail right for me?”.

Is this trail right for me?
  • For motivated hikers (16–65 years old). Fitness matters more than age. The trail is accessible to anyone who is healthy, active and ready for a challenge. You don’t need to be a top athlete, but good preparation is essential. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • A sure foot helps. On top of the long climb up Galdhøpiggen, the route has two exposed sections (Bukkelægeret and Besseggen). They don’t require climbing skills, but you need to be comfortable on steep, rocky terrain.
  • Self-guided. You walk independently, so you need to be comfortable following marked mountain paths with the help of the app.
  • A light rucksack. Since you sleep in huts, you only carry a light rucksack with your personal belongings.
  • The route details. To find out more, see our detailed analysis (distance, elevation, weather and terrain) in the “Is this trail right for me?” section of the page.
What is included in the price?

The base price includes:

  • 6 nights: 2 nights in the hotel in Dombås and 4 nights in cosy mountain huts in Jotunheimen National Park
  • Breakfast from day 2 to day 7 and a hearty evening meal in every mountain hut
  • The shuttles from Dombås to Spiterstulen (day 2) and from Gjendesheim to Dombås (day 6)
  • A briefing with a local ranger
  • A self-guided hut-to-hut route, well balanced and carefully prepared
  • The Travelbase app with all the practical info and offline maps
  • A training programme, a complete packing list and tips to help you prepare

Flights, train tickets, lunches, the other meals and the options are extra.

Where do we sleep during the trail?

During the trail, you sleep in Dombås and in four staffed huts in Jotunheimen National Park:

  • Day 1: hotel in Dombås
  • Day 2: Spiterstulen
  • Day 3: DNT Leirvassbu
  • Day 4: DNT Gjendebu
  • Day 5: Memurubu
  • Day 6: hotel in Dombås

In the huts, you sleep in shared rooms or dormitories with bunk beds. All the huts have toilets, a warm dining room where the evening meal and breakfast are served, and a friendly atmosphere among hikers.

Included in the base price: the nights of days 1 and 6 in the hotel in Dombås, with breakfast, and those of days 2 to 5 in a hut, with a bed in a shared room or dormitory, evening meal and breakfast. For your last night in Oslo (day 7), you can book a bed in our hostel as an option.

What do we eat during the trail?
  • Included: breakfast every morning from day 2 to day 7 (at the hotel in Dombås or at the hut) and a hearty evening meal in every mountain hut on days 2 to 5.
  • Lunch on the trail: add our lunch pack as an option when you book (vegetarian or with meat), or buy snacks at the huts along the way.
  • At your own expense: lunch and evening meal on day 1, evening meal on day 6 in Dombås, lunch and evening meal on day 7, and all meals on day 8.
  • Water: you can fill your bottle at the huts and from fast-flowing mountain streams along the way.

Jotunheimen National Park: Norway’s highest mountains

Jotunheimen National Park covers 1,151 km² of wild mountain landscapes in the heart of southern Norway. Protected since 1980, it is home to more than 250 peaks over 1,900 metres, including Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m) and Glittertind (2,465 m), the two highest mountains in Northern Europe.

Glaciers carved this landscape into deep valleys, sharp ridges and countless lakes, including Lake Gjende, which stretches for 18 km and gets its emerald colour from glacial sediment. Reindeer roam the high plateaus, while the valleys fill with wildflowers in summer.

People have been hiking from cabin to cabin here for more than 150 years. With its network of marked trails and staffed mountain cabins, many of them run by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT), Jotunheimen is one of the best places in Europe for a multi-day trek.
